Story of Cow and Shivalinga:— Once upon a time in ancient times, a shepherd used to bring his herd of cows and calves to the banks of Bagmati river for grazing every day. One day he saw that the shepherd’s favorite cow used to go to a particular place every day and drop her milk on the ground.

The shepherd was very surprised to see this and he observed the cow doing the same thing every day for a day or two. Then the shepherd started digging that place. During the excavation, the shepherd was surprised to see a wonderful and divine Shivalinga there.


It is said that this Shivalinga was Swayambhu (self-arising), which is a symbol of Lord Shiva. After this incident, people started considering this place as extremely sacred and started worshiping here. Pashupatinath temple was established at this site.

It is also said that Lord Shiva himself chose this place for his abode and hence it is called Pashupatinath, which means ‘Lord of the Animals’. The importance of this holy site is also mentioned in Hindu scriptures, and the site has developed over time as a major pilgrimage site.
